Insectarium

Insects play a vital role in our New York City community by decomposing the city’s organic matter and pollinating the vast majority of our food-bearing plants. They comprise, on average, 80 percent of all terrestrial species on Earth and their representation in the Museum collections counts into the millions. This course will revolve around the brand-new Susan and Peter J. Solomon Family Insectarium in the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation. While in this course, students will explore entomology, insect biodiversity, human health, and the Museum scientists that have contributed research and specimens to the Insectarium. We will practice various insect collection methods in the field and preparation techniques back in the lab. Using the Museum’s insect collections and new technologies, students will explore a variety of digital tools that allow us to study these tiny creatures in new, more visible ways.
